Start with culture

A new company often goes through three stages in this order:

  1. An idea
  2. The doing
  3. A way of doing

We take an idea, put it into action and a way of doing emerges i.e. a culture.

Stop.

Instead, start with culture.

  • Ideas pivot
  • The doing is endless
  • But culture is entrenched

Every organisation has a culture and most stumble into it. Some don’t bother to codify it. Some do but then pay lip service to it.

Culture guides alignment, consistency and decision making.

Need a real world example of how powerful culture can be to provide alignment, consistency and decision making?

Two thousand years ago an organisation started that today has 2.4bn members living by 10 rules. Beyond Christianity, there are 5.8bn people affiliated to four thousand religions.

Or look to the world of sport. Clive Woodward’s 2003 World Cup winning England rugby team had its culture codified in The Book of Teamship Rules. John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach, set his out in his Pyramid of Success.
